● Course Description
As a second part of Communication System course in undergraduate program, this course is an introduction to the basic principles underlying the design and analysis of digital communication systems. It first presents a concept of the analog-to-digital conversion (ADC), including the sampling theorem and quantization technique. Pulse coded modulation (PCM) will be discussed as one of the waveform coding schemes, which are to reproduce the waveform output of the source at the destination. Digital modulation schemes are introduced for baseband channel with additive white Gaussian noise. Then, the effect of channel distortion on the transmitted signals subject to the band-limited channel is characterized in terms of inter-symbol interference (ISI). A concept of equalization will be discussed for suppressing ISI. The various types of digital signal modulation schemes via carrier modulation, PSK, QAM, and FSK, are treated and discussed from a practical system viewpoint, e.g., application to the commercial systems. Some selected topics in digital communication, e.g., multi-carrier modulation and spread spectrum, will be introduced as key techniques in modern digital communication system. Finally, a concept of channel coding will be introduced as an essential part of digital communication system. Both block code and convolutional code will be presented as two important classes of error correction codes, along with their decoding scheme, e.g., syndrome decoding and Viterbi algorithm. This course will be a foundation to more advanced classes in the communication and network track, e.g., mobile communication engineering

● Course Description
As a first part of “communication system” course in undergraduate program, this is an introduction to the basic principles for analog communication, which will be a foundation to understand the modern wired and wireless communication systems. It will cover the basic mathematics for signals & systems. Furthermore, a random signal will be studied for modeling the background noise in the communication systems. Then, a performance of analog communication is analyzed under the additive random noise. Finally, analog-to-digital conversion process will be introduced as a bridge to digital communication, whose design principle will be completely studied in the subsequence course (KECE322).
